"Global warming is no longer the future. It is now. We can't just stand back and let it continue. We can't waste our time discussing shallow and superficial matters. We have to use our power as individuals to make the right choices. To save our planet. One world. One chance. Our choice."

climate change connection

Climate Change Connection is a three year project which encourages pupils in Bath & North East Somerset to explore and respond to the global impacts of climate change.

The second B&NES Young People's two-day Climate Change Conference, which we organised in conjunction with Ralph Allen School and the University of Bath, attracted around 200 students, teachers and speakers.

The Met Office Hadley Centre and Water Aid set the scene on day one, exploring the science of climate change and its impact, particularly on the poorest communities in the world. These presentations were followed by a variety of workshops and a compelling and entertaining performance from 'The FEW' (Frome Eco-Warriors). On the second day the key speaker was Marks & Spencer's Climate Change Manager, followed by a group from a German school, who impressed everyone not only by their competence in delivering a presentation in fluent English, but also by the examples of national action on CO2 reduction and widespread environmental awareness that they shared with their British audience.

The young people at the conference were fantastic and engaged with complex issues and different activities with great enthusiasm. They came up with challenging questions and displayed a real commitment to tackling climate change and to living more sustainably. The final session of the conference gave them the chance to present their views to a panel of invited guests, including Bath's MP, Don Foster, several councillors, and representatives from local industry and education sectors. It was a moving and powerful finale.
