Slower Speeds Initiative - Bath 20 mph zones

As part of the national 'Slower Speeds' initiative, Envolve and Bath & North East Somerset Council are working on three 20 mph / traffic calming initiatives in Bath.

Areas chosen for improvement are 'Poets Corner' in Bear Flat, Camden Road in Lower Lansdown and Queens Drive in Fox Hill. The locations were selected in response to local concerns about speeding traffic and road danger.

· Community consultations were held during 2002 to ascertain local responses to draft proposals for change.

· The information collected was forwarded to traffic engineers at B&N.E.S. Council. The original proposals were then adjusted to accommodate the results of the consultation.

· The resulting plans are currently passing through the Council planning process, before works are undertaken in each area.

· In addition to this, a competition to 'Design a Sign' was organised during the summer of 2002, by Claire Howland, Youth Initiatives Officer at Envolve. Children local to the Fox Hill area of Bath, attending Ralph Allen School, were asked to design a '20 mph/slower speeds' road sign. The winning design will eventually be incorporated into the new road signs used in the three project areas.

· the consultation reports compiled by Envolve have now been passed to B&NES Council for further action.either Peter Bailey or Mike Baugh of the Traffic and Safety Team (tel. 01225 394254).
