change your world

Background

Over the last year Change Your World worked with 12 groups of young people in Bath and North East Somerset. They were either based at youth centres in Radstock and Southside, or contacted through detached youth work on the streets of Foxhill, Twerton and Keynsham. Each of these groups has undertaken a project according to their interests aided by youth workers to access further funding, build links with partner organisations, address health and safety issues and provide support and encouragement to the young people. 199 young people have been directly involved in the projects with with many other members of the community also benefiting from the work.

Projects

12 projects were undertaken including

1. Fire Sculpture (19th- 24th November 2001)
Young people in Foxhill designed and built a 20-foot fire sculpture abd then ran a community event with the lighting of the fire being the focus

2. Wheels (8th January - 8th February 2002)
Wheels' involved stripping down and re-building two motorised go-karts with the help of a qualified mechanic over a six-week period

3. Football Tournament (29th March 2002)
Young people in Foxhill who were keen to play football against other teams, decided to set up a day tournament involving five teams from other local estates.

4. Re-Cycle project (8th April -16th June 2002)
With help from a bike mechanic, each young person learnt the skills necessary to re-build two old broken or discarded bikes. One they kept themselves and one was sent to send to Africa, via a charity (also called Re-Cycle).

5. Graffiti Jam (August 2001)
The young people in Keynsham who initiated this project were disengaged from formal education and other youth provision. They were interested in graffiti, and needed an impressive project to hold their interest. A youth worker and graffiti artist worked alongside the group to create a large-scale graffiti mural under the Keynsham flyover.
