families in foxhill

This popular initiative ran for six months in 2004. The group was well attended and included making healthy recipes, going on a trip to an organic farm, and producing a series of photo-recipe cards. For a copy of the recipe cards, or more info, contact Kate Allport ... Envolve is continuing our work on food issues through the Young Innovation project and will be producing more resources, including a set of Food Top Trumps.

New, weekly after-school drop-in sessions for both children and adults to learn how to cook fresh, healthy food.

The 2004 project

2004 saw the start of a new pilot project called 'Families in Foxhill'. Run as after-school drop-in sessions for both children and adults where they were be able to learn how to prepare fresh, healthy food. The weekly sessions involved a wide range of activities including play, cookery sessions, presentations and visits.

Activities included pancake tossing competitions on Shrove Tuesday, cooking ‘multi-coloured meals’ and a visit to Radford Mill Farm. The visit was a big hit! The children and adults met the animals and learnt about benefits of organic and seaonsal food production. Each child sowed a pumpkin seed and picked elderflowers to make their own delicious cordial. The 'Food Quiz for Healthy people and a Happy planet' was really fun and we plan to add to resources like these and create a resource which can be shared with teachers and community groups. If you’re interested in helping, we’d love to hear from you!

The project was led by Envolve but it is supported by a Steering Group of local residents and agencies, including the local health visitors, B&NES Basic Skills, Foxhill Point Group, Somer and the local Councillor.

"This is a fantastic community project to try to get people involved in cooking fresh healthy food rather than processed food which is stuffed with sugar and salt."

Roger Symonds, Steering Group member and Councillor for Combe Down

How this project came about
'Families in Foxhill' follows from Envolve's recent Foxhill Food Survey which identified food and healthy eating as something that people wanted to learn more about. Many people said they wanted to know more about how to eat healthily and how to cook healthy meals so we decided to try to offer an after-school club which could address these needs.

"I'm glad something is happening now after the food survey. The group will be a good opportunity to learn to cook economical, well-balanced healthy food for you and your family."

Local resident Patricia Griffin
