Local Food Procurement for Schools

The recent report on Obesity from the Parliamentary select Committee has again raised the problem of our children's health and diet. At present there is very little locally produced food in school meals. Schoolchildren are not receiving the best and freshest produce and local farmers, growers and producers are missing a valuable and consistent local market. Can this situation be changed?

Jeanette Orrey has already achieved this at her primary school in Nottinghamshire. As catering manager of Saint Peters Primary School she decided to run an independent school meals service sourcing as much local and organic food as possible. This helped to pass on the healthy eating message reconnecting everyone with how food is produced and allowed the school to regain control over their menus. On Monday June 28th Jeanette will be speaking in Bath as part of the Green Light lecture series, advising parents, school staff, local officials and members of the public how local schools can do the same.

The Green Light Lecture will be held on Monday 28th June 2005 at the Bath Royal Literary and Scientific Institute, 16 Queen Square, Bath.

Doors will open at 7pm for a 7.30pm start and tickets will cost £2.50 on the door. Refreshments will be available.

Green Light is a joint project between Greenpeace, Friends of the Earth and Envolve. It could not succeed without the support of its sponsors: Marks & Spencer and ESD. This lecture is additionally sponsored by Grove Lodge Bed and Breakfast.
