As it happens, I picked Envolve almost by accident. I had never studied anything environmental, scientific or political in my academic days, so I wasn't sure what I had to offer. So initially, just to test the water, I pottered around a while, reshuffling journals, designing signs, little odd jobs here and there, feeling a little lost and overwhelmed, trailing the IR co-ordinator around like an attention-starved puppy... and then I saw the library: a compact, yet expansive repository of information and the written word, messy, jumbled, but full of possibility. It was love at first sight. So now, I struggle away at it: I enter new books and leaflets, whenever they miraculously appear, I bring old stuff into a standardised, practical format, enjoy my info empire, excise all the rubbish, do miscellaneous administrative distractions, and direct curious visitors to the right documents for them. Thinking about the best things about volunteering here... I really have enjoyed the various links with projects and places around the city I have gained, which I otherwise wouldn't have found, I've met so many fine folks with similar interests, and so many others involved in totally new ideals and projects, given me the chance to find out so much I didn't know before - and then as well, you get to meet and see all the various visitors all pushing ahead with all their different ways to change the world: it's really inspiring! |
